At 1521 hours on 10 October 1942 Wellington BK311 crashed while approaching Elsham Wolds when returning from a training exercise. At the time of the crash, the wind was gusting quite strongly thus causing the pilot to lose control as he neared the runway. A fire developed and the aircraft was burnt out. Four of the crew members were killed in the crash, one fatally injured and the sixth member was unharmed.
