On 12 June 1942, Kittyhawk AL170 flown by Pilot Officer Young was one of a formation of two aircraft on a reconnaissance mission in the Trigh Capuzzo area, east of El Adem. During the flight, the formation reported it was being attacked by enemy aircraft, and AL170 failed to return from the reconnaissance. A report received from an escaped Prisoner of War stated that the body of Pilot Officer Young had been buried 20 miles from Tobruk, but this could not be confirmed.
