Flight Sergeant Woolf had completed 32 operational sorties (five against Berlin) and he was awarded the Path Finder Badge.

At 0051 hours on the morning of 2 January 1944 Lancaster JA960 took off from Bourn detailed to bomb Berlin. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire when home bound and crashed into a hill near Aachen at 0507 hours. All the crew members were killed.
