On 27 July 1944, Leading Aircraftman Wood, a Fitter II Engines, was riding a bicycle returning to his home when he was struck by a motorcar on the Melbourne side of the Laverton Railway overhead bridge on the Geelong / Melbourne Highway. He later died of his injuries in the Station Sick Quarters, Laverton.
