On 21 December 1943, Spitfire A58-241 flown by Flight Sergeant Wolkenhaar was carrying out a shadow shooting attack on a target in Lake Victoria. The aircraft failed to pull out of a dive, and crashed into the bank of the Lake. It was presumed that the pilot misjudged his height above the sand and crashed at approximately 260 mph.
