On 5 April 1944, Corporal Whitman, a Radio Direction Finding (Radar) Operator, was evacuated by RAAF launch from Bat Island, New Guinea, to No. 26 Medical Clearing Station, Los Negros, suffering from scrub typhus. He died on 22 April 1944.
