On 25 October 1916, Air Mechanic Wells embarked for the UK and was posted to No. 3 Squadron then under training in the UK.  He was diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculosis on 1 January 1917 and embarked for Australia on 2 February 1917.  He died at No. 11 Australian General Hospital, Caulfield VIC, on 16 April 1917.
