At 2339 hours on the 31 July/1 August 1942, Hampden AE244 took off from Balderton detailed to bomb Dusseldorf Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by an enemy night fighter and crashed at 0335 hours, some 2 kms south east of Zevendonk (Antwerpen), 4 kms south of Turnhout, Belgium. Three of the crew members were killed and one became a prisoner.
