On 6 April 1943, Kittyhawk FR271 flown by Sergeant Ward was one of 12 aircraft detailed to bomb and strafe enemy concentrations in the forward area in Tunisia. At 1610 hours, FR271 was hit by anti-aircraft fire and spun in and burned when it crashed and Sergeant Ward was killed.
