On 31 July 1942, Leading Aircraftman Wallace, a Trainee Pilot flying Wirraway A20-610 was authorised to carry out air to gunnery exercises at the Big Springs Gunnery Range. During the exercises, signals were placed against him, owing to his recovery being too low. He then carried out a low run in front of the targets, and in doing so, the port main plane of the aircraft struck the ground, and the aircraft crashed at approximately 1225 hours and he was killed.
