At 0113 hours on 3 November 1942 Catalina EP124 took off, to carry out convoy escort duties in the Western Mediterranean. At 0855 hours signal was received from EP124 “made contact with convoy.” Nothing further was heard from the aircraft and it did not return to base. It was due to return by 1800 hours. Following post war investigations and enquiries, it was recorded in 1948 that the missing crew members had lost their lives at sea.
