On the night of 20 June 1942, Hampden AT185 took off from RAF Waddington detailed to attack Emden, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter, and crashed at 0059 hours to the north of the Dutch island of Ameland, and all the crew were killed.
