On 10 May 1945, Leading Aircraftman Thornton, a Fitter II Engines, was admitted to Medical Receiving Station, Morotai, seriously ill with expectoration of blood. He was transferred by air to No. 6 RAAF Hospital, Heidelberg, and died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis on 26 June 1945.
