At 0730 hours on 17 March 1944, Boomerang A46-48 took off from Mareeba detailed to carry out an artillery air direct shoot exercise. During the exercise, the engine of the aircraft cut out at 0830 hours and the aircraft crashed when making a forced landing and Flying Officer Thompson was killed.
