The DVA record shows Flying Officer Thompson’s enlistment at Sydney but he has a service number indicating an enlistment in Victoria (410XXX).

At 1630 hours on the night of 4 December 1944 Lancaster PB281 took off from Metheringham detailed to bomb the railway yards at Heilbronn, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed enroute to the target and six of the crew members were killed and one became a Prisoner of War.

In a later report Flight Sergeant Burton stated “the aircraft iced up, went out of control and crashed with the full crew on board between Stuttgart and Heilbronn. The aircraft burned when it crashed.”
