At about 1930 hours on 28 April 1945, Aircraftman Class I Thomas in company with Leading Aircraftman Dick stole a jeep from Stuart St Townsville and proceeded along Charters Towers Road. Travelling about 40 mph the jeep swerved to avoid some bumps, got out of control and went over the edge of an embankment and overturned. Aircraftman Class I Thomas died of his injuries and Leading Aircraftman Arthur Dick (77351) (Discharged: 23 January 1946) was severely injured. The accident occurred about 12 miles north east of Macrossan.
