On 11 March 1944, Warrant Officer Tew in Hurricane LF426 took off from Newmarket and shortly before 1430 hours it was seen to join in formation with an Oxford trainer. It then seemed that the Hurricane broke off, banked steeply, and the Pilot lost control and failed to recover before the aircraft hit the ground and burst into flames near Weltmore Farm in Norfolk. Warrant Officer Tew was killed.
