On 16 December 1915, Second Lieutenant Sutherland resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

On 28 February 1917, Second Lieutenant Sutherland was killed when Sopwith Two-Seater aircraft 7810 suffered structural failure in the air during a steep dive and crashed.
