At 1850 hours on 29 July 1947, Warrant Officer Stevens flying Beaufighter A8-356 solo spun into the ground from about 4,000 feet. The aircraft was on an engine feathering exercise and at about 1,000 feet the port engine was seen to break from the airframe.

Having died outside the specified period (3 September 1939 to 30 June 1947), Warrant Officer Stevens does not meet an eligibility criterion for inclusion on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour for World War II. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission recognises his death.
