At 0012 hours on the morning 31 January 1943 Lancaster W4189 took off from East Kirkby detailed to bomb Hamburg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed near Luneburg and all the crew members were killed.
