Spitfire BP348 was in transit from the UK to Malta. The aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters after landing at the Halfar aerodrome, Malta. The aircraft made an attempt to take off again but crashed and Flight Lieutenant Sly was wounded. He was admitted to hospital and died later that day.
