On 5 July 1942, Kittyhawk AL114 flown by Flight Sergeant was one of six aircraft detailed to bomb and strafe a forward aerodrome and motor transport concentrations in the El Daba area. The enemy aerodrome was successfully strafed, but while attacking motor transport strong anti-aircraft fire was encountered and AL114 was shot down and Flight Sergeant Simpson killed.
