On 11 May 1918, Second Lieutenant Sherar was killed in the crash of Sopwith Camel aircraft B.9242 at Lilbourne, near Rugby, Warwickshire. The Court of Enquiry found that, while doing aerobatics, Second Lieutenant Sherar failed to notice that he was losing height and started, voluntarily, into a spin at a height of about 1,000 feet. He had just started to recover when the machine struck the ground.
