On 13 November 1943, Leading Aircraftman Scells, a Cook, together with two other RAAF members were surfing at Bargara near Bunaberg, when they noticed some people in difficulty with the undertow. After assisting these people, it was noticed that Scells was some 30 yards out further than the rest, and was in difficulties himself. Several people went to his aid and when they reached him, he appeared to collapse. He was taken to the beach and artificial respiration was applied for half an hour without success.
