On the night of 9/10 August 1944 Wellington LN663 took off from Tortorella landing ground detailed to carry out a sortie against the Romania Americana oil refinery, Ploesti, Romania. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. LN663 and Wellington LP485 of No. 30 Squadron RAF crashed on 10 August 1944 – one aircraft crashed at Cotroceni, a suburb of Bucharest, and the other at Caciulati which is about 15 miles north of Bucharest. However, it was not possible to establish which aircraft crashed where. All the crew members of LN663 were killed.
