Wasile pier area in the Halmaheras was a major target of the First Tactical Air Force in January and February 1945. In one of these attacks, at about 0900 hours on 24 February 1945, Kittyhawk A29-1029 was hit by anti-aircraft fire which caused the starboard wing to separate and the aircraft to crash near the target, killing its pilot Flying Officer Robinson.
