On a reconnaissance sortie over the English Channel on 27 September 1941 Hurricane Z3258 flown by Pilot Officer Roberts was shot down into the sea near Gravelines, France and he was missing. Pilot Officer Roberts had previously been credited with damaging one Ju88 on 14 May 1941.
