At 2102 hours on the night of 10 April 1942 Halifax R9484 took off from Middleton St George detailed to bomb Essen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. R9484 crashed at Oer-Erkenschwick, approximately 12 miles north west of Dortmund, Germany. All the crew members were killed.
