On 15 February 1942, Kittyhawk AK605 flown by Sergeant Reid took off at 1300 hours in a scramble from a standby with other Kittyhawks to intercept enemy aircraft over Gambut Landing Ground. While climbing, AK605 was attacked from above by an unseen Me109F and shot down in flames 5 miles south west of the Landing Ground.
