Flying Officer Read was killed when his aircraft (A29-163) collided with Kittyhawk A29-160 (Pilot Officer Kenneth William Baxter (408687) (Pilot)) during gunnery practice near Onslow WA and then crashed and burned. A29-160 made a forced landing with Pilot Officer Baxter unhurt and the aircraft was recovered by No. 17 Repair and Salvage Unit.
