On 29 July 1941, Sergeant Read, a Pilot, embarked at Sydney for Singapore. He was killed on 22 December 1941 when Buffalo W8209 he was flying crashed into a Japanese Ki-43 aircraft during a dogfight over Kuala Lumpur.
