On 26 January 1917, Second Lieutenant Powell resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

During an offensive patrol on 31 October 1917, Second Lieutenant Powell, flying SE5 aircraft B4847, was last seen engaging enemy aircraft near Menin.
