On 26 May 1944, Sergeant Potter, a Fitter Armourer, was seriously injured with multiple shell wounds, when a detonator exploded while lecturing Army personnel at Wangella in the vicinity of Mareeba. Sergeant Potter was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station but died of his injuries later that day. One Army member, Lance Corporal Norman Charles Boyd McGregor (NX30313) was killed and several were injured.
