On 24 October 1917, Second Lieutenant Pilkington died of injuries when RE aircraft 3841 that he was flying crashed at Yatesbury.  A witness reported that the engine had been shut off prior to landing and the aircraft suddenly dived into the ground.  The aircraft had been flown earlier in the day without incident and the cause of the accident was unable to be determined.
