At 2346 hours on the night of 21 June 1943 Stirling EE887 took off from West Wickham detailed to carry out a raid on Krefeld, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed about 1 mile north west of Hoogwoud, Netherlands, at approximately 0300 hours on 22 June. All the crew members were killed.
