MID Citation: I have the honour to submit herewith the name of No. 448 Private C E Paul, whose services I wish to bring to your Lordship’s notice in connection with the operations described in my Despatch of 11th December 1915. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. 44 dated 6 April 1916.
DFC Citation: Lieutenant Paul is a gallant and skilful pilot, who has been very ably assisted by his Observer, Lieutenant Weir (1). These officers have shown great initiative in attacking ground objectives on numerous occasions, notably on 14th August, when in the face of intense hostile fire, they, at very low altitude, attacked bodies on enemy cavalry, causing heavy casualties. They have also displayed great courage and skill in air combat having destroyed four enemy aircraft. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. 61 dated 23 May 1919.

On 26 December 1918, Lieutenant Paul embarked on HMT Wiltshire at Suez to return to Australia. On 22 January 1919, he fell overboard from the Boat Deck and while every effort was made to rescue him, his state of health was believed to have mitigated against his ability to remain afloat. He had been admitted to hospital in Egypt suffering from Pleurisy immediately before embarking.
