On 10 April 1917, Captain Palfreyman resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army

After bombing Maria Aalter, Belgium, on 23 May 1918, Captain Palfreyman (Pilot) and Second Lieutenant William Irwin Crawford RAF (Observer), flying DH4 aircraft A7840, were last seen going down near Thourout.  Second Lieutenant Crawford was wounded and taken as a Prisoner of War, and repatriated on 4 January 1919.
