At 2249 hours on the night of 22 May 1944 Lancaster ME690 took off from Mepal detailed to bomb Dortmund, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. ME690 was shot down by a night fighter and crashed near Neerpelt (Limburg), 21 miles north of Hasselt, Belgium. All the crew members were killed.
