On 13 May 1942, Kittyhawk AL172 flown by Flying Officer Pace was one of 12 aircraft carrying out an offensive patrol over a forward area. When over Acroma the formation was attacked by 2 Me109s and AL172 was shot down and Flying Officer Pace was killed.
