Mosquito HX858 took off from RAF Thorney Island at 0230 hours the morning of 5 August 1944, one of 14 aircraft from the Squadron detailed to carry out night intruder attacks on rail junctions, bridges, pontoons, barges, trucks, sidings, trains and marshalling yards in northern France. HX858 failed to return to base from the mission. No trace of the missing aircraft and crew members was found.
