On 26 January 1917, Second Lieutenant Nutter resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

During an engine test on 15 September 1917, Second Lieutenant Nutter, flying Nieuport 23 aircraft B1578, spun into the ground from 2,000 feet near the Squadron’s Advanced Landing Ground.
