On 31 July 1944 No. 44 Squadron (RAF) Dakota KG690 crashed into a cliff face, 6 miles west of Cape Risut near Salalah on the South Arabian coast. The five all-SAAF crew members along with 29 passengers were killed. Following post war enquiries and investigations it was recorded that the casualties including RAAF members Flying Officers Newth and Swire had no known graves.
