At 1114 hours on 12 December 1944 Lancaster HK627 took off from Mildenhall to bomb an enemy target at Witten, Germany. The aircraft was shot down in flames at Stockum, some 4 miles north north east of Witten and all the crew members were believed killed. No trace could be found of Pilot Officer Murray or Flying Officer Lee who are listed as missing with no known grave.
