On 27 August 1942, Kittyhawk A29-108 flown by Pilot Officer Munro was flying No. 3 in a flight of four aircraft led by Squadron Leader Leslie Douglas Jackson DFC & Bar (270520) (Discharged: 8 February 1946) on patrol near Gurney Field. The flight was attacked by 10 Zeros and 5 dive bombers. A29-108 was seen being attacked by two Zeros west north west of the airstrip, and about 2 miles distant and at a height between 1-2,000 feet. A Zero followed A29-108 into cloud and the aircraft was not seen again. The wreck of the aircraft and the remains of Pilot Officer Munro were later found.
