At 1000 hours on 14 September 1944, Mosquito LR406 took off from Benson detailed to carry out photo reconnaissance over Leipzig, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed on to a mountain near Badgfund in the Hartz mountains, about 48 miles north east of Kassel, Germany and the crew was killed.
