At 2304 hours on the night of 26 April 1944, Lancaster ND847 took off from Wickenby to attack Essen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base. Following post war investigations, it was established that the aircraft had been hit by anti-aircraft fire, exploded in mid-air and crashed at Buderich near Dusseldorf. Flight Sergeant Moxham has no known grave while the remaining six crew members are interred at the Rheinberg War Cemetery.
