On 31 August 1941 Sergeant Mills was flying a Tomahawk aircraft on an exercise when for some unknown reason the aircraft got into a spin and was unable to recover. It crashed from about 6,000 feet some 6 miles south west of Fayid aerodrome, Cairo, and Sergeant Mills was killed.
