Lancaster W4782 took off from Holme-on-Spalding Moor on the night of 8/9 December 1942 detailed to carry out a gardening (mine-laying) mission and lay mines in the Great Belt area. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed at 2030 hours near Novrup, 4 kms east of Esbjerg, Denmark. Three of the crew members were killed and four became Prisoners of War.
