On 14 May 1944, Flight Sergeant McNamara, an Instrument Maker from No. 18 Squadron died of his injuries in a motor transport collision, on the main north/south road, approximately two miles south of the Middle Arm road. In the accident Sergeant Albert Grosvenor Brittain (8124), a Canteen Steward, was killed and other members were injured.
