At 1330 hours on 16 September 1943, Tiger Moth R4886 flown by Leading Aircraftman McMahon crashed approximately eight miles north east of Griffith, NSW, and he died of his injuries. The aircraft took off at 1230 hours, authorised to carry out a solo exercise within the training area, in which low flying was not authorised. When the aircraft crashed it was flow flying over property owned by his sister and brother–in-law that was outside the training area.
